There is often no warning to a tsunami. However, earthquakes are often a cause of a tsunami, any earthquake occurring near water may cause a tsunami. About 80% of all tsunamis occur in the Pacific Ocean, but wherever large amounts of water are found. They may be caused by landslides, volcanic explosions, bolides and seismic activity.

Signs of an approaching tsunami
A tsunami cannot be prevented or predicted. Geologists and Oceanographers analyse each earthquake and based upon many factors of the earthquake eg.its strenth may or may not issue a tsunami warning. There are many systems being developed to reduce the damage from a tsunami. One of the most important systems that is used and constantly monitored are bottom pressure sensorshttp://www.seismic.ca.gov/images/tsunamiwave.jpg
